Duke experts have pushed the frontiers of cardiac imaging in recent years, revolutionizing how surgeons and cardiologists inspect and understand the heart and blood vessels without an invasive procedure. They are leaders in 3D echocardiography and cardiac MRI, enabling them to plan surgeries and interventions with incredible precision.
BIOMED SCAN MRI uses a powerful magnetic field, radiofrequency pulses and a computer to obtain detailed pictures of the heart structures. MRI is noninvasive and does not use radiation (x-rays).

Prior to the MRI scan, you will be required to change into a hospital gown. This is to prevent artifacts on the final images and complies with safety regulations. You will be asked to remain very still for the duration of the exam. If you suffer from claustrophobia or fear of small spaces, we will discuss additional comfort measures with you. We can also give you an oral sedative to help reduce anxiety and discomfort during the exam.
For some MRI scans, a contrast material is needed to enhance the images. This is usually a gadolinium based contrast material. This is less likely to cause an allergic reaction than the iodine-based contrast used in CT and X-ray exams.
During the MRI scan, you will hear a loud knocking noise while the images are being developed. To minimize the impact of this noise, earplugs or headphones may be provided to you. You will be able to communicate with the technologist at all times using a two-way intercom and can press a buzzer to get their attention if needed.
